Decolonizing Reading Instruction for Black Boys

Classrooms have always had both representation and an outpouring of positive self-images of White characters, but this has not been the reflection or experience of children of color (Wright & Counsell, 2018). If teachers want to decolonize their approaches to reading, they must reflect on and refine the images that are projected in what they give Black boys to read.

"Words We Live By, Close Read of the US Constitution"

The students will analyze what a text says (U.S. Constitution) explicitly and draw logical inferences; support an interpretation of a text by citing relevant textual evidence.

Dr. Michael Lowe is a poised, passionate, knowledgeable, and engaging speaker. Our staff at Washington Marion were completely locked in as he tackled the realities of implicit bias and racial inequity in education. Mr. Lowe took the time to research and craft his presentation specifically to the needs of our school based on the current data metrics. Simply put, we have invited Dr. Lowe to return to our campus to continue and follow-up the conversation and provide additional supports to our staff throughout the school year. He is more than worth the investment for our school's culture and community.
